Why We Travel in Small Groups (and What That Changes)
Aug 1, 2025
One of the things that sets Momiji & Maple apart is our insistence on having smaller group sizes when it comes to travel. We believe that it is one of the most important, yet at the same time the most overlooked, when it comes to group travel.
Here are 5 reasons why we stand behind our commitment to having smaller group sizes:
Better Access to Hidden Gems
When you see a post or a reel on top places to eat ahead of when you travel, one thing is clear - it is very likely that many others have also seen it and are looking to experience it for themselves. Everyone is on the hunt for the next hidden gem. And they’re often hidden because they are a small local shop making just enough dishes to perfect their craft. Now, imagine a small restaurant or café popular with locals or other visitors that can only seat 12 or so people. A larger group size simply wouldn’t be able to make that work, considering many shops do not take reservations and walking up hoping for a spot would be impractical (or even impossible). The beauty of small groups is being able to go where large groups simply can not. With a local coordinator ensuring plans go smoothly, you’ll be brought to local favourites you simply wouldn’t think to go on your own, all while having the flexibility to stroll up for a seat or a quick waitlist.
Authentic Connections with Fellow Travelers
You know that feeling where you have something clever or funny to say and you look around hoping someone picks up on it and gives that wide-eyed look right before a big laugh? Beyond enjoying a curated itinerary, the feeling that comes with being able to talk about it with other like-minded people keeps the excitement flowing into the next day. The value of having shared experiences and laughs throughout the trip makes every moment - even the small otherwise forgettable ones - memorable. By keeping the group small, conversations flow organically while the shared experiences provide the words. Guests often are not thinking too much about meeting new people, but by the end of the trip become life-long travel companions because of their many shared experiences.
Slower Travel, Richer Memories
Photos are an amazing way to remember and freeze a moment of your trip to relive again when you see it. It’s for this reason that we don’t believe in an overly jam-packed schedule, where it looks great as an idea on a brochure (for example: “See 60 Top Sights in 3 Days!”) but in practicality, it means getting off and on a bus every 15 minutes. Each location we choose is intentional and allows our guests to immerse themselves and create memories that are worth looking back on - worth taking a picture and remembering.
A More Thoughtful, Less Touristy Experience
This one is a little bit more abstract, but I believe if you're reading this, you likely feel the same way. Most people that travel don't want to be seen as a tourist. There’s a certain feeling that comes when someone hears the word “tour package”; where images of a flag-waving guide and giant buses typically come to mind. No one enjoys being rushed from one location to another that unintentionally takes away from the charm of being in the moment. There's a desire for a more authentic local experience that carries into the places they would like to see and food they choose to eat. With the added bonus of not feeling like a disruption to local life - there’s a sense of extra openness and welcome from the people that live there making way for connection without many words.
Focus on guest
Allow us this final point to share a moment of pride. We want to provide the best possible experience for our guests and we have found that the best way to do so, is to focus on a select few people to ensure every detail is done right. We are looking to go above and beyond for each of our guests that trust us with providing an unforgettable experience. In addition, we include a local coordinator to handle any on-site logistics or any communication challenges that may come up.
Overall, smaller group sizes are not just a preference, but a fundamental aspect of how we believe travel should be experienced. It’s about more than just seeing new places and checking them off; it’s about feeling connected, enjoying genuine moments, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
